The Prelude to War

The Battle of Waterloo was the culmination of a long and bitter conflict between France and the Allied powers. Napoleon Bonaparte, the brilliant military leader who had conquered much of Europe, had been defeated at the Battle of Leipzig in 1813. However, he had escaped from exile and returned to France in 1815, determined to regain his lost empire.

The Allied powers were determined to prevent Napoleon from regaining power. They formed a coalition of armies from Britain, Prussia, Austria, and Russia. The Duke of Wellington, the British commander, was given overall command of the Allied forces.
