In the late 19th century, when African American women were largely excluded from positions of leadership in the church, Amanda Smith emerged as a powerful and influential voice for the Gospel.

Born into slavery in Tennessee in 1837, Smith experienced firsthand the horrors of racism and oppression. But she also found solace in her faith, and at a young age she began preaching to her fellow slaves.

After the Civil War, Smith continued to preach, and her powerful sermons soon drew large crowds of both black and white listeners. In 1870, she was ordained as a minister in the African Methodist Episcopal Church, becoming one of the first African American women to be ordained in the United States.

Over the next four decades, Smith traveled throughout the country, preaching the Gospel and inspiring countless people. She was a strong advocate for social justice, and she spoke out against racism, sexism, and poverty.

Smith's story is a powerful reminder of the power of faith and the importance of speaking out against injustice. She was a pioneer for women in ministry, and her legacy continues to inspire people today.
