By John Howard Lawson
Blacklisted Screenwriters: Agents of Stalin, Allies of Hitler is a fascinating and well-written book that tells the story of the Hollywood Ten, a group of screenwriters who were blacklisted by the film industry in the 1950s for their alleged communist sympathies. The book is based on extensive research and interviews with the screenwriters and their families, and it provides a unique and nuanced look at this complex and controversial period in American history.
Lawson, one of the Hollywood Ten, was a prominent screenwriter and director in the 1930s and 1940s. He was also a member of the Communist Party USA. In 1947, Lawson was subpoenaed to testify before the House Committee on Un-American Activities (HUAC). He refused to answer questions about his political beliefs, and he was subsequently blacklisted by the film industry.
Lawson's book is a powerful and moving account of the blacklist. He writes about the fear and intimidation that the screenwriters faced, and he exposes the lies and distortions that were used to justify their persecution. Lawson also provides a detailed analysis of the political climate that led to the blacklist, and he shows how the Cold War and the fear of communism created a climate of hysteria that made it possible for a small group of powerful men to destroy the lives of innocent people.
Blacklisted Screenwriters: Agents of Stalin, Allies of Hitler is a must-read for anyone interested in American history, the Cold War, or the blacklist. It is a powerful and moving account of a dark period in American history, and it is a reminder of the importance of free speech and civil liberties.
