Dunbar High School, founded in 1870, was the first black public high school in the United States. Located in Washington, D.C., Dunbar played a pivotal role in the education of African Americans during the era of segregation.

Dunbar was founded by abolitionist and educator John Mercer Langston. Langston believed that education was the key to racial equality, and he dedicated his life to providing black students with access to quality education.

Dunbar quickly became a renowned institution, attracting students from all over the country. The school's curriculum was rigorous, and its teachers were some of the most respected in the nation. Dunbar graduates went on to become leaders in all walks of life, including education, politics, law, and medicine.

Dunbar was also a center of cultural and social activity for the black community in Washington, D.C. The school hosted concerts, plays, and other events that brought the community together.

In 1954, the Supreme Court ruled in Brown v. Board of Education that segregation in public schools was unconstitutional. This decision led to the desegregation of Dunbar High School in 1955.

Dunbar High School is now a National Historic Landmark. The school building has been restored to its original condition, and it is now a museum that tells the story of Dunbar's legacy.
